Students cannot begin working on Academic Training until they have their work authorization in hand. Students must submit the application for Post Completion Academic Training to the International Scholar and Student Services Office BEFORE completion of the academic program. Academic Training is a type of off-campus work authorization for employment in a student's field of study (does not need to be an “academic” job). The J-1 student’s program sponsor (the institution that issues the DS-2019) is responsible for granting the authorization. Students sponsored by UCSC must request authorization from UCSC's International Scholar and Student Services (ISSS). Students who are sponsored by institutions other than UCSC (i.e Fulbright) should check with that sponsor for information eligibility.
Pre-completion Academic Training
Academic Training used before the completion of the degree program must be part-time (20 hours per week or less) during the academic terms, this is including all other employment. It may be full-time over official school breaks. Graduate students advanced to Ph.D candidacy may work full-time during the academic terms with recommendation from their academic department and ISSS adviser.
**Must apply at least 2 weeks before proposed EMPLOYMENT BEGIN DATE.
Post-Completion Academic Training
Academic Training used after completion of the degree program can be full-time or part-time.

Post- Doctorate students - The overall limit for academic training for those who have completed a doctoral degree is 36 months, inclusive of prior periods of academic training.
